Original Painting, 2025
Madeleine
This powerful feminist piece embodies liberation from the gaze of others and the reclamation of autonomy. Inspired by the 1786 Tignon Law—which sought to suppress Black women’s self-expression through mandated head coverings—the artwork reinterprets this history as a symbol of beauty, resilience, and defiance.
Echoing the spirit of Portrait de Madeleine (often called "the Black Mona Lisa of the Louvre" and featured in Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Apeshit video), the painting reclaims visibility and agency, paying tribute to women who transform oppression into elegance.
The background’s color palette draws from classic African textile patterns, celebrating cultural heritage and linking past and present through fabric, self-expression, and creativity.
