Born in Barbados and now based in Toronto, he draws from a wide range of influences — from childhood memories and animation to Caribbean culture, nature, and everyday life — creating a visual language that feels both familiar and unexpected.
What drew us to Darriel’s work is its sense of curiosity. His paintings often place recognizable figures, symbols, and references into new contexts, inviting viewers to look beyond first impressions. Beneath the vibrant colours and polished surfaces is an ongoing exploration of identity, perception, and the many ways we choose to reveal—or conceal—ourselves.
There is a cinematic quality to his work. Characters appear suspended between worlds, carrying traces of fantasy, memory, and contemporary culture all at once. The result feels playful yet thoughtful, approachable yet layered with deeper questions.
